Timber Cladding Removal

Trident Facades provides timber cladding removal services where an existing timber façade system needs to be removed as part of façade remediation, refurbishment or replacement works.

Removal is planned around the existing construction, access requirements, temporary protection and the condition of the underlying wall system, allowing the exposed façade to be assessed and prepared for subsequent works.

When Is Timber Cladding Removal Required?

Timber cladding may need to be removed where the existing system is being replaced or where investigation has identified defects that require access to the underlying construction.

Common reasons include:

  • Widespread decay, rot or deterioration
  • Persistent moisture or water ingress
  • Defective or deteriorated battens and support framing
  • Inadequate ventilation behind the cladding
  • Inadequate fire performance
  • Defective or missing cavity barriers and fire stopping
  • Unsuitable timber species or treatment
  • Damage affecting a substantial area of the elevation
  • Removal required as part of a wider façade remediation strategy

Removal requirements depend on the existing construction, extent of defects, access arrangements and the works planned following removal.

Our Timber Cladding Removal Service

Existing façade review – Reviewing available surveys, drawings, assessments and other project information to establish the existing timber cladding system and planned removal requirements.

Façade investigation and opening-up – Where required, undertaking targeted opening-up to establish the construction behind the timber cladding and identify concealed components.

Site preparation and protection – Preparing the work area and protecting surrounding finishes, occupied areas and vulnerable building elements.

Scaffolding and MEWP access – Providing or coordinating suitable access arrangements for safe removal across the affected elevations.

Temporary weather protection – Protecting exposed areas of the building during removal where the underlying construction is temporarily exposed.

Controlled timber cladding removal – Carefully dismantling and removing timber boards and associated components in accordance with the planned sequence of works.

Battens, rails and fixing removal – Removing associated battens, rails, brackets, fixings and defective support components where included within the removal scope.

Exposure of underlying construction – Exposing the backing construction, insulation, membranes and other concealed components for assessment or preparation.

Protection of underlying construction – Taking appropriate measures to protect exposed construction from weather and damage during the works.

Segregation and disposal – Removing waste materials from site and arranging appropriate segregation and disposal in accordance with the project requirements.

Preparation for replacement works – Leaving the exposed façade in a suitable condition for subsequent repairs, preparation or installation of the replacement system.

Investigation During Timber Cladding Removal

Removing timber cladding can expose construction that cannot be fully assessed from the external face.

Where required, our dedicated survey team, Trident Facades Surveys, can undertake targeted investigation and opening-up during the removal works to establish:

  • Existing wall construction
  • Insulation and backing materials
  • Cavity and ventilation arrangements
  • Support and fixing arrangements
  • Cavity barriers and fire stopping
  • Areas of moisture damage or deterioration
  • Conditions requiring repair before replacement

This can provide additional information for the replacement design and specification.

Preparing The Façade For Replacement

Following removal, the exposed construction can be inspected and prepared for subsequent works.

Depending on the findings, this may include substrate repairs, replacement of defective insulation or membranes, repairs to support systems, installation or reinstatement of cavity barriers and fire stopping, and preparation for the new cladding system.

Timber Cladding Removal As Part Of Remediation

Timber cladding removal can be delivered as a standalone service or as part of a complete replacement or wider façade remediation project.

Investigation → Strategy → Removal → Assessment → Preparation → Replacement
